Challenge

Children with critical and/or chronic illnesses and those with life-altering disabilities experience pain, fear, depression, anxiety and isolation. They suffer from feelings of lack of control over their lives and the physical changes that often accompany critical illness, injury or disability can be devastating. The severe illness or disability of a child also takes an enormous toll on the entire family. This program provides art support to 8,500 children and family members annually.

Solution

Children's Healing Art Project (CHAP) brings the healing power of art to children in crisis through a mobile team of teaching artists working in local hospitals, clinics and community art spaces. Research demonstrates the importance of art in the healing process: It helps patients and family members cope, encourages compliance with treatment plans, increases self-confidence, encourages self-expression, reduces stress, pain, isolation and anxiety and promotes quality of life.
This program helps critically ill, disabled and hospitalized children and family members cope and heal through hands on art projects to enhance the quality of their hospital experience and whole family well-being throughout treatment and recovery.

Long-Term Impact

Program helps patients and family members cope, encourages compliance with treatment plans, increases self-confidence, encourages self-expression, reduces stress, pain, isolation and anxiety and contributes to overall well-being.
