Challenge

Philadelphia's high school dropout rate hovers at 50 percent and 550,000 working-age city residents (52 percent) are functionally illiterate; they lack the literacy skills to follow simple written instructions, complete job applications or properly read bank statements and news articles. MIGHTYVISION is a direct response to our city's literacy crisis and to two common misperceptions of Philadelphia kids: (1) they don’t want to read or write; (2) they head to South Street looking for trouble.

Solution

Mighty Writers teaches Philadelphia kids, ages seven to 17, to think and write with clarity. Our free programs help combat the literacy crisis in Philadelphia, where nearly half of high school students drop out and some 50% of working-age adults are functionally illiterate (they can't read bank statements, fill out job applications or easily comprehend news articles). It is our vision that five years from now, Mighty Writers will have created a citywide community of confident young Philadelphians who can express themselves with clarity and achieve success at school, at work and in life.
Through our programs at MIGHTYVISION--a graphic novel and comic book workshop/gallery space on Philadelphia’s South Street--we are fighting illiteracy by turning 250 local kids into comic writers and artists this year.

Long-Term Impact

Our MIGHTYVISION project improves literacy in Philadelphia by teaching 250 kids to write and create their own graphic novels and comic books. It showcases local kids' creativity and highlight the positive contributions they bring to our city.
