5,000 disadvantaged children in 12 NYC schools (located in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens) will be receiving music education for the first time during 2014-15, but their schools do not have any materials and supplies for the new music classroom. We are also identifying new partner schools for 2015-16, and they will have brand-new needs.

Education Through Music (ETM) was formed in 1991 with a mission to promote the use of music in inner-city schools and schools in disadvantaged areas, as a means of enhancing students' academic performance and general development. At ETM, we believe every child deserves a well-rounded education: one that includes music both as a subject in its own right and as a means of supporting learning in other areas. ETM makes music education a reality for thousands of children who would otherwise have limited or no exposure to the arts, uses music instruction to strengthen students' ability to learn in all areas, and works to build schools' capacity to sustain programs.
This project will provide instruments, materials and supplies so that 5,000 inner-city children in NYC can participate in music-making within an engaging classroom environment. In 2014-15, ETM is launching new programs at 12 inner-city schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. These kids will be attending music class for the first time, and it is vital that they have access to materials and instruments to experience the benefits of music education such as creativity and innovative thinking.

Long-Term Impact

With these instruments and supplies, the music teachers can create a learning-friendly environment for these students, and provide instruction that will support learning in music, critical thinking, and general development like self-esteem and motivation. Your support will give teachers the tools to create engaging lessons and make the new music program an unforgettable experience for 5,000 students.
