Challenge

Our youth face lower educational engagement, lower graduation rates, lower post secondary education enrollment, higher poverty, higher unemployment and lower life expectancies in the communities we serve. Tapping into their passions and potential can make the difference between becoming resilient and successful or replicating cyclical poverty. Engaging 200 teens in STEM entrepreneurship and career development activities is a rung on the ladder to short term outcomes and lifelong achievement.

Solution

To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, healthy and caring citizens.
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands' mission is to help those who need us most to become productive caring healthy educated citizens. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programming is a tool to help us develop youth. We give the opportunity for members to build on skills while preparing for post-secondary education, a STEM career, and entrepreneurship. STEM Academy students engage in hands-on STEM instruction, receive mentoring and coaching. On startup day 200 students will shine.

Long-Term Impact

Teens develop STEAM entrepreneurial skills and get an opportunity to engage in an incubator environment. Long term - students will become more engaged in school, develop a career pathway, graduate from high school then enroll in some level of post-secondary education that will lead to employment and/or business development. 200 teens will participate. Awards will be given to top three teams determined by a panel of judges comprised of business and community leaders, enterpreneurs and investors.
