Challenge

Minority youth lack health knowledge, exposure to health careers, and opportunities to pursue their professional goals. As a result, minorities are severely under-represented in the health field.

Solution

The mission of the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) is to empower a diverse population of underserved youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood, through multi-cultural, comprehensive, and innovative programs that address youth's social, academic, and career needs.
The LAYC Teen Health Promoters Program aims to equip youth 14-18 with the knowledge and skills they need to pursue their goals as future health professionals. During the program they gain comprehensive health knowledge and learn how to talk with peers. The participants prepare for and complete in internships in DC clinics and hospitals. By providing opportunities in medical settings and exposure to health careers, we propel youth along their paths toward the health field.

Long-Term Impact

Providing minority youth with health knowledge, exposure to health careers, and opportunities to pursue their professional goals is a vehicle to improve access to the health field and attainment of health careers. The LAYC Teen Health Promoters Program is cultivating the next generation of minority health professionals.
