Young adults from the age of 21 are forced to make their own way in our world, even if they have disabilities. Some young adults are even encouraged to graduate early, ensuring they don't receive educational resources to which they are entitled. The Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice criticized Virginia's assistance for adults with disabilities multiple times, but even with that attention, more than 9,500 people remain on a multi-year waiting list for assistance.

SPARC is a unique day program operating in local community centers for adults with disabilities. Adults with disabilities too often lack options to have an active role as full citizens in their community after graduating from the public school system. Adults with disabilities desire the same outcomes in life as people without disabilities. They want to work, enjoy friends, and give back to their community. SPARC provides a dynamic program in a community setting with the appropriate supports so people with disabilities can stay united with their families, connected within their neighborhoods, and enjoy their friendships. Our goal is to ensure all students with disabilities graduate to a life of opportunities not isolation. We offer life-long learning opportunities for individuals with life-long disabilities. Whatever the disability, SPARC can modify and adapt activities to faciliate the personal preferences expressed by each participant. SPARC is an active, engaging, vibrant program in an encouraging and cooperative setting for adults with all disabilities.
This project establishes a fund for adults with disabilities to attend SPARC without paying the monthly membership fee. We help participants with lifelong and vocational learning, and make it easy to attend vocational and like skills classes at low prices. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need.

Long-Term Impact

We will provide educational and support services for more than 35 people in the communities we serve. Many will move on to work programs or otherwise socialize themselves into the community. Others attend SPARC instead of simply being trapped at home with little or no outside interaction. After a bootstrapped start, we opened our second location in October 2011 and our third in February 2015. Each location helps 10-14 adults in the local community.
