Challenge

Research shows that four years old is too late to close the achievement gap. Right now, the average high-income preschooler knows 1,100 words while his low-income peer knows only 500. This 600-word deficit will become a 15,000 word deficit by high school, leaving low-income children 4 years behind and 5 times less likely to graduate. Even the most effective school-age interventions have failed to close the word gap. Successful interventions start from birth.

Solution

MISSION: Word Rebel's mission is to fight the 600-word deficit that divides low and high-income preschoolers to close the achievement gap before it starts. WHY IT MATTERS: By preschool, a high-income child knows 1,100 words while the typical low-income child knows only 500. This 600-word deficit becomes a 15,000 word deficit by high school, leaving low-income children five times more likely to dropout, with only 50% graduating on time. We give parents and caregivers the tools they need to teach their children 1,100 words from birth to preschool to close the achievement gap before it starts. WHAT WE DO: Word Rebel is partnered with 60 subsidized day cares serving 5,000 children living in poverty in Brooklyn, Harlem, Manhattan and the Bronx. We connect day cares to free books through partner book distributors, and we distribute educational resources that: Teach parents about the importance of preschool vocabulary; Teach parents HOW to build vocabulary and reading skills with limited time and access to books; Subscribe parents to a weekly email-text service for free access to literacy resources, including three free e-books and tips to build vocabulary and reading skills.
This project will provide high-quality books and and early literacy support to 5,000 children living in poverty in New York City.

Long-Term Impact

This project will deliver high-quality books, alongside literacy training resources, to Word Rebel's 60 Day Care partners serving 5,000 low-income children (0-5 years old) in Brooklyn, Harlem, Manhattan and the Bronx. This project makes story-time, and equal opportunity, possible for the children who need it most. By donating books, you give low-income parents the words they need to close the achievement gap before it starts.
